5 Tips To Help Prevent Eczema Flare-Ups This Summer

Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a dermatological condition that makes your skin red and itchy. The itchy and dry skin that is associated with eczema can lead to small, red bumps that leak fluid and crust over. While it’s more common in children, eczema can hit at any age.

While there’s no cure for eczema, treatment options and lifestyle changes can help alleviate the flare-ups. Because eczema is such a common problem — it affects 35 million Americans — Eliot Y. Ghatan, MD, and his team at Dr. Ghatan Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery have compiled this helpful guide to help you stay protected this summer.

Preventing eczema flare-ups

Eczema, like other allergic or dermatologic conditions, can become worse in the summer. Overheating can lead to the release of histamine, and sweat can irritate your skin, which can lead to flare-ups. Here are some tips for preventing and managing eczema flare-ups this summer.

Keep your skin protected

Wear loose, breathable clothes. And keep in mind that light-colored fabrics do a better job of reflecting the sun. Furthermore, put on sunscreen and wear wide-brimmed hats for complete sun protection.

Keep your indoor air clean

Use an air purifier at home to filter out dust, dander, and other allergens. You may also want to use a humidifier, as air conditioning can dry out the air in your home.

Be careful about what you put on your skin

If you have eczema, you should make sure your sunblock is hypoallergenic. In fact, you should be reading the ingredients on all of your skincare products, including your moisturizers, sunscreens, and insect repellants. These products can contain harsh chemicals that may irritate your skin and worsen flare-ups.

Practice good hygiene

If you spend a lot of time outside or work up a sweat often, be sure to shower off when you can and change into clean clothes to stay fresh and dry.

And if you go swimming, be sure to rinse off the saltwater or chlorinated water so you can keep any irritants off your skin. And don’t forget to reapply sunscreen and moisturizer afterward.

Stay hydrated

Dehydration is a major irritant when it comes to eczema. So be sure to drink water regularly, and take some with you when you engage in outdoor activities.

Reduce stress

Stress, in fact, is the leading cause of eczema flare-ups. If you find yourself stressed a lot, try to find time to unwind. Relax, take walks, or do other things you may enjoy.
